The hip prosthesis

By definition a prosthesis replaces a part of the body. In this case it is the joint between the upper part of the femur (thigh bone) and the basin. This procedure has been dramatically improved over the past decades and is one of the most successful operations in the field of orthopedics.

A hip prosthesis is done of 4 components:

  • A stem which is introduced into the femur

  • A metal cup with is inserted into the basin

  • A prosthetic head which is fixed on the stem

  • A inlay which is inserted into the metal cup

Different operation techniques can be used, Dr. von Waldburg uses the anterior approach which known for giving the least complications and the most rapid recovery. Walking can start the day of the surgery and usually patients stay two or three days in the hospital.
